April J. Mouton and Tyler Dashner step into senior leadership roles to help IM grow its impact, elevate its voice, and stay rooted in what matters most: supporting teachers and students.
Tucson, AZ — July 9, 2025 — Illustrative Mathematics (IM) today announced two key promotions: Dr. April J. Mouton to vice president of content development and Tyler Dashner to vice president of communications, effective July 1. Both have served in interim roles since the beginning of this year.
As vice president of content development, Mouton will lead the strategic vision and development of content for IM’s K–12 curricula and professional learning, guiding a talented team committed to creating high-quality, problem-based math materials that spark curiosity and build deep, lasting understanding. With over two decades of experience as a teacher, administrator, and consultant, Mouton brings expertise in equity-forward systems and culturally responsive instruction. She joined IM in 2023 as director of access and equity and has been a driving force in curriculum development ever since.
“April has been a powerful voice for equity and instructional excellence,” said Kristin Umland, president and co-founder of IM. “Her inspirational leadership and commitment to our mission make her the ideal person to lead this next chapter in our content strategy.”
Dashner, now vice president of communications, will steer IM’s brand vision, strategic messaging, and public profile — ensuring that every interaction, from social media to national marketing campaigns, advances the organization’s mission to help all learners know, use, and enjoy mathematics. With a background that spans the U.S. Senate, political campaigns, national nonprofits, and teaching middle school, Dashner has spent his career using the power of storytelling to move people and inspire change. Since joining IM in January 2025, he has led several major communications initiatives and has become a trusted advisor across the organization.
“Tyler brings a rare mix of strategic insight, educator empathy, and storytelling skill,” said Umland. “He has quickly become an indispensable part of our team and our voice in the field.”
We couldn’t be more excited to officially welcome Mouton and Dashner into their new roles, and we look forward to the impact their leadership will have on IM’s work, our partners, and the students and educators we serve.
